    Pattern formation of indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells

    Using a nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation including short-range two-body attraction and three-body repulsion, we investigate the spatial distribution of indirect excitons in semiconductor coupled quantum wells. The results obtained can interpret the experimental phenomenon that annular exciton cloud first contracts then expands when the number of confined excitons is increased in impurity potential well, as observed by Lai \emph{et al.} [Lai etal.et al., Science \textbf{303}, 503 (2004)]. In particular, the model reconciles the patterns of exciton rings reported by Butov \emph{et al.} [Butov etal.et al., Nature \textbf{418}, 751 (2002)].     The nature of solar brightness variations

    The solar brightness varies on timescales from minutes to decades. Determining the sources of such variations, often referred to as solar noise, is of importance for multiple reasons: a) it is the background that limits the detection of solar oscillations, b) variability in solar brightness is one of the drivers of the Earth's climate system, c) it is a prototype of stellar variability which is an important limiting factor for the detection of extra-solar planets. Here we show that recent progress in simulations and observations of the Sun makes it finally possible to pinpoint the source of the solar noise. We utilise high-cadence observations from the Solar Dynamic Observatory and the SATIRE model to calculate the magnetically-driven variations of solar brightness. The brightness variations caused by the constantly evolving cellular granulation pattern on the solar surface are computed with the MURAM code. We find that surface magnetic field and granulation can together precisely explain solar noise on timescales from minutes to decades, i.e. ranging over more than six orders of magnitude in the period. This accounts for all timescales that have so far been resolved or covered by irradiance measurements. We demonstrate that no other sources of variability are required to explain the data. Recent measurements of Sun-like stars by CoRoT and Kepler uncovered brightness variations similar to that of the Sun but with much wider variety of patterns. Our finding that solar brightness variations can be replicated in detail with just two well-known sources will greatly simplify future modelling of existing CoRoT and Kepler as well as anticipated TESS and PLATO data.Comment: This is the submitted version of the paper published in Nature Astronom

    Strain effects on the thermal properties of ultra-scaled Si nanowires

    The impact of uniaxial and hydrostatic stress on the ballistic thermal conductance (Îşl\kappa_{l}) and the specific heat (CvC_{v}) of [100] and [110] Si nanowires are explored using a Modified Valence Force Field phonon model. An anisotropic behavior of Îşl\kappa_{l} and isotropic nature of CvC_{v} under strain are predicted for the two wire orientations. Compressive (tensile) strain decreases (increases) CvC_{v}. The CvC_{v} trend with strain is controlled by the high energy phonon sub-bands. Dominant contribution of the low/mid (low/high) energy bands in [100] ([110]) wire and their variation under strain governs the behavior of Îşl\kappa_{l}.Comment: 4 Figures, 8 Pages, submitted to AP

    Teleportation via thermally entangled state of a two-qubit Heisenberg XX chain

    We find that quantum teleportation, using the thermally entangled state of two-qubit Heisenberg XX chain as a resource, with fidelity better than any classical communication protocol is possible. However, a thermal state with a greater amount of thermal entanglement does not necessarily yield better fidelity. It depends on the amount of mixing between the separable state and maximally entangled state in the spectra of the two-qubit Heisenberg XX model.Comment: 5 pages, 1 tabl

    Metastable Dynamics of the Hard-Sphere System

    The reformulation of the mode-coupling theory (MCT) of the liquid-glass transition which incorporates the element of metastability is applied to the hard-sphere system. It is shown that the glass transition in this system is not a sharp one at the special value of the density or the packing fraction, which is in contrast to the prediction by the conventional MCT. Instead we find that the slowing down of the dynamics occurs over a range of values of the packing fraction. Consequently, the exponents governing the sequence of time relaxations in the intermediate time regime are given as functions of packing fraction with one additional parameter which describes the overall scale of the metastable potential energy for defects in the hard-sphere system.     Shaking Table Test of the Taiwanese Traditional Dieh-Dou Timber Frame

    This article attempts to explore the dynamic behavior of traditional Dieh-Dou timber structure under different combinations of structural forms and vertical loads. Using time-history record (TCU 084) from the Chi-Chi earthquake, two semi full-scale specimens (Symmetric and Asymmetric) were tested. Results showed that the Symmetric specimen tends to be damaged more easily and faster than the Asymmetric one. Damage pattern generally begins from the bottom Dou members and subsequently spreading upwards to the upper Dou, horizontal Gong members, and adjoining Shu members. Friction force between the contact surfaces is crucial towards the maintenance of overall structure. Increase vertical loadings have significant effect on the natural frequencies and global stiffness of the structure. Using the Single-Degree-Of-Freedom (SDOF) system, the derived stiffness is generally in good agreement with the dynamic results of both forms. This study suggests that the effects of increasing vertical loadings should be taken into consideration for future evaluation

    The Pathway to Low Outlier Status in Venous Thromboembolism Events: An Analysis of Pancreatic Surgery in ACS NSQIP

    Introduction: Our institution’s hepatopancreaticobiliary service (HPBS) is a high-volume pancreatic surgery service, which has demonstrated consistently low rates of symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) compared to similar institutions as reported by NSQIP. We sought to determine if the HPBS’s regimented multimodal VTE prophylaxis pathway plays a role in achieving consistently low VTE rates. Methods: We queried the ACS NSQIP Participant User File and our institution’s data from 2011-2016 for major pancreatic operations. We used Chi-squared analysis to compare the HPBS and national patient populations, and created a matched dataset based on preoperative patient factors. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed on both the aggregate and matched data to determine independent risk factors for symptomatic VTE formation. Results: Among 36,435 NSQIP patients, 850 (2.3%) received surgery by the HPBS. VTE rates were significantly lower for the HPBS (2.0%) compared to the national cohort (3.5%) (p=0.018); this significance was seen in the matched cohort as well (p=0.040). Upon multivariate analysis, having an operation performed by the HPBS independently conferred lower odds of VTE formation in both the aggregate (OR=0.572, p=0.024) and matched (OR=0.530, p=0.041) cohorts. Discussion: The HPBS had statistically lower rates of symptomatic VTE compared to the national cohort as reported by NSQIP. We identified an independent protective effect of the HPBS on VTE formation, which we believe to be due, at least in part, to adherence to a high risk VTE prophylaxis pathway. This pathway could serve as a model for other institutions hoping to improve their VTE rates
